As SOA can be applicable to a wast range of scenarios from a simple B2B integration to a full fledged SOA enabled enterprise having a service repository, complex business processes, spectrum of external systems with diversified technology environment, each enterprise and vendor views SOA from a view which is relevant to its requirements and goals. As a result there has been hundreds of books , articles written on SOA but we see some contrasting views, understanding gaps in projecting the concept of SOA.

While exploring this world of SOA, I came across this excellent series of books on SOA by Thomas Erl.
One wishing to read this series should start with Service-Oriented Architecture: Concepts, Technology, and Design which explains the SOA concepts, the technology tobe used to implement it and other useful insights into SOA which clears lots of misconceptions surrounding it as well as lays a foundation for correct understanding of SOA. Next book which I feel is the extension of the first one is SOA Principles of Service Design covering the design principles for SOA. Next in the series is Service-Oriented Architecture: A Field Guide to Integrating XML and Web Services which talks about the main technologies; XML and webservices and their role in SOA. The extension of this is Web Service Contract Design and Versioning for SOA which is more of technology related in contrast to the previous ones which are more theoretical. This one explains how the service contracts to be designed to achieve the characteristics of SOA and the related technologies like XML,SOAP,WSDL,WS-*. The last one is SOA Design Patterns which covers a series of design patterns applicable to a range of implementation environment to realize a successful SOA.
